SIAST projects; freeze motion with light, Creative Composition,Tonal Harmony, Elements of Design, Portrait photography

This was a photography assignment in my flash Photography class at Siast.  If was a fun project but very time consuming. I took a hand fun of two toned gems and dropped them into water as I simultaneously pushed the camera on to capture these stunning photos of splashes.

Creative Composition

Creative Composition has six elements and they are:  unusual camera angle, rule of thirds, frame within a frame, perspective, balance and symmetry and dynamic line. Some of these elements I found difficult to shot but I think over all I learn something about each element.

Unusual Camera Angle/ rule of thirds

This element of creative composition I found the easiest.  Just by turning the camera at different angles and taking pictures at a different perspective you can create creativity. The Rule of Thirds for this exercise I had to put my main object in the third of the picture.  This was very hard to do because I had to train my eye to see the picture in thirds rather then in the middle of the frame.

Frame within a frame/Dynamic Line
This was an interesting topic because I had to place my main subject within a frame.  Another example of this is someone within a door frame or a building within a treed area. Dynamic Line we were to find "S" curves or things with diagonal line.  Downtown Regina had a lot of dynamic lines.

Perspective
Perspective gives the feeling of depth or that the road or railroad tracks keep going beyond the photo.

Tonal Harmony

There are six elements in tonal harmony they are: high key, low key, warm tone, cool tone, color is the subject and muted color.  All of these elements have one thing in common and that is color. I found this to be a fun topic to explore.

High Key

High key is pretty much white on white, very light and bright.  I used my wedding dress to demonstrate this element. This element you would see in a comedy or romantic movie where the setting needs to be lighter.

 Low Key

Low key is black on black and capturing only a small amount of light onto your subject. These colors would be something you would see in a gangster movie with the  feeling very dark.

Warm tone
To have tonal harmony with warm tones you need yellow, orange, red which are all on one side of the color wheel.  The  gold is considered warm and the chocolate makes you feel warm.  I like this photo because it has tonal harmony, repetition, the rule of thirds and cropping.

Muted color
Muted color are pastel and not bright colors.  I like the look I see in this photo of straws.

Color is the subject

If you were to Google color is the subject you would see pictures with  lots of color.  That is not the case with this subject, in order to have tonal harmony the picture needs to have only one color.  In this picture I choose a red flower with a red liquid and used a shallow depth of field.

Elements of Design

Elements of design  includes six topics they include: line, color, texture, pattern, repetition, and cropping. I had gone to Phoenix during this assignment and captured some of the elements in that location.

Pattern and Cropping
Pattern is your subject have design within it and once you photograph it your realize the wow factor within that subject. Cropping means getting in close with out losing the detail of the picture you are taking.  This picture also has dynamic line with a "S" curve.

Line and texture
Line is just that anything that shows line in the photography and again it can be anything from trees, people, buildings etc.. Texture represents something you want to reach out and touch.

Repetition and Color,
Repetition says it all something that repeats. It could be anything, trees, chairs, people, flowers anything that the photographer may find interesting as well as catches attention to the interested viewer. Color, photograph things that are colorful. I choose pencil crayons because are so many different colors to chose from in the  box.  What was explained to me by my instructor was try to include as many elements in your photographs as you can to make the photograph even more interesting.
